Product Launch: P8271Z Hinge

As far as flight case lid fixing goes, the piano hinge is as tried and tested as it gets in the industry. When the lid needs to be permanently attached to the case but also needs to swing away, every builder knows they do the job well.

However, how far back they can swing and how well is another story. Adding a lid stay keeps the lid open and in place but doesn’t allow for a full swing and rest.

One way to achieve this is to use a “double-knuckle” piano hinge - two parallel hinges in one. These allow for a 270° swing but at a sacrifice of strength and safety. This is because they typically require thinner, weaker pins less suited to larger lids. Even worse, surface-mounted hinges are exposed and susceptible to inoperation due to impact damage and wear.

So how can you achieve a full swing and a safe, durable hinge? This is where Penn Elcom comes in. Our design team has created a perfect solution - the P8271Z double hinge.

The newest entry in the range offers flight case builders a dish-sunk double knuckle hinge with more robust pins ideal for heavy duty. With two fitted to the case, even heavy lids are securely hinged and are able to swing all the way open to rest safely against the back.

This model gives case builders quick, easy access to all sides of the case without worrying about ‘lid bounce’ causing stress. And, since the hinges are sunk they’re no longer exposed to knocks and damage that can easily deform or break normal hinges.
